Ponds are ideal for creating a haven for marginal plants and wildlife. Trees and shrubs can be planted on the normal ground to provide shelter and screening, whilst marginal plants create attractive, colourful fringes around the pond and 'working plants' such as Reeds help to treat the water.

| Tree and shrub areas Pond bankings and surrounds, comfortably above high water level, suitable for trees and shrubs, possibly providing shelter or screening and wildlife habitat. High water level The line to which water may rise in wet or winter weather, or at peak flow. Low water level The line below which water doesn't normally drop. Shallow water margin c 0-30cms, where marginal species would be included to form attractive decorative fringes. Mid depth water c 30cms - 1.0mtr, suitable for Reeds and 'working plants'. (Reedbeds and water treatment) Deep open water c 1.0mtr +, deep water where plants do not normally grow. |
