Woodland Trust Active Kids Initiative

Packs of trees being loaded onto lorry for distribution around the UKCheviot Trees are delighted to have recently been involved with an exciting project for the Woodland Trust which has involved producing hedge, copse & edible tree packs.  The edible packs contain dog rose, elder, cherry plum, hazel, crab apple and blackthorn saplings. All of which, when mature will not only provide shelter and habitats, but also edible nuts and fruit.

Over 18,000 schools from across the UK have received cell grown trees that have been successfully grown by Cheviot Trees as part of the Sainsburys Active Kids initiative.

Since the Trust launched hedge & copse packs in autumn 2004 over two million trees have been planted by schools and youth groups across the UK, providing a valuable contribution to native woodland habitats. The edible packs are new for the Woodland Trust and have been compiled to help increase the availability of food sources for many of our native species.

This project was a milestone for Cheviot Trees as it was our first large scale project using 100% Peat Free compost. We look forward to working with the Trust on further projects as part of their efforts to increase forest cover in the UK.

Kent County Council opts for Cell Grown Trees again
Kent County Council has recently awarded the contract to supply 32,000 native broadleaf trees and schools for their ‘Free Trees Scheme’ to Cheviot Trees for a third year in a row. Ordering on behalf of Six Countryside Management Partnerships with the County, the Cell Grown plants are delivered to each central pick up point for the partnerships on a specific date ready for collection. The scheme has been a huge success for the county as anyone can register to get their free trees by filling out an online application form. Additional tree and protection are also available to purchase as required.

Cheviot Trees is proud to be part of this incentive again this year, as anything that gets more trees planted is beneficial to our environment.

500,000 trees supplied to Borders Forest Trust
Trees being loaded on to lorry heading to the Devils Beef Tub at Corehead. In recent years the Borders Forest Trust have been working hard to establish Native broadleaf woodlands in the Scottish Borders area, and Cheviot Trees are growing and have supplied the first of nearly ½ a million trees, mostly grown from seed collected locally.

The latest batch in this project, seen here being loaded, are to be planted at the Devils Beef Tub scheme at Corehead just north of Moffat. Given the hostility of the site, Cell Grown trees were chosen to achieve best results as there will be little good soil to plant into on such an upland site.

Cheviot Trees have already supplied the Tubex tree shelters and stakes for the same contract to give added defence against vermin.

Scottish Aspen Propagation
To conserve Scottish native aspen stocks, Cheviot Trees have collected material from selected clones of Aspen throughout Scotland. Genuine Scottish Aspen stock is now available, with limited quantities ex stock, but with contract grows available for next season (2011/12).  This stock will only be available in cells @ circa 40/60cm height.
