 Heather
colours our heathlands and moors with masses of purple flowers in late
summer. It used to be a very important resource in Scotland where
it was used for thatch, bedding, kindling for fires amongst other
things.
Regular burning and grazing keeps Heather
from getting to woody, especially important for the management of grouse
which feed on the young growth. It tolerates being trampled on and
salt spray hence it covers such large areas of land.
Leaves & Flowers
Very small, stiff leaves. Small bell shaped flowers appearing in
late summer are an important source of nectar for bees.
Distribution
Common on heaths, moors and mountains throughout the UK.
