Growing and harvesting of trees, short rotation forestry (SRF) and energy crops for woodfuel or biomass, is an increasingly popular, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy source.
Replacing or substituting increasingly expensive, unsustainable and planet damaging use of fossil fuels with sustainably produced Renewable energy from wood fuel and biomass is a sustainable way forward where land, lifestyle and end use allows.

With many species typically taking between 20 to 70 years to become fully productive, growing trees for biomass can be a very long term project. Woodfuel and biomass production can be a by-product of long term commercial forestry, and can become available at many stages along a wood and forest’s growth. Income from woodfuel adds real value to the thinning and clearfell returns often turning a cash negative woodland operation into a strong cash generator. |

Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) is the growing of tree crops in an intensive and well managed manner, to maximise yield and productivity in as short a timescale as possible. This involves the careful selection and matching of species to location, and the careful layout and design of the planting in order to combine some early yield (c. 5 to 10yrs), usually via thinning, and also a medium term (c. 10 to 30yrs) yield. The final outcome may result in a long term stand of ‘proper’ timber trees, which could turn into traditional woodland producing a potentially valuable long term timber crop together with a woodfuel supply. |

Short Rotation Coppice is the most intensive form of production of woodfuel/biomass. Usually crops of woody species, grown in varying degrees of intensity and on agricultural cropping rotations. Energy crops usually re-grow or coppice after harvest. The crop lends itself to automation and easy economical handling and processing. |
