Cheviot’s
Native Trees go to Highland Road Contract
Cheviot Trees have
successfully extended their contract to grow another 25,000 cell grown
trees and shrubs, all of local seed provenance, for the Scottish
Executive, to be planted on the A830 road improvement near Arisaig.
With the 1st
phase of the contract now establishing successfully, the landscaping on
the ‘Road to the Isles’ is developing rapidly. The additional
contract will take the project to completion in 2009.This
new road will improve access, reduce journey time and improve
safety for locals and tourists alike to share the wonderful views.
For the first time, the
'fitting roads concept' will be employed, making construction wholly
sympathetic to the environment. Following the Scottish Office’s
“Cost Effective Landscape: Learning from Nature” guidelines, all
landscaping work is designed ‘to work with nature’.
Adequate
forward planning has allowed specific seed collections to be made, and
the planting stock to be grown to the required specification and date,
enabling genuine ‘Best Value’ to be achieved. Contract
grows are the only effective way forward for such specific plantings.
