Get
Recycling for Trees
Successful recycling
leads to planting of 35,000 native trees this
winter in over 300 local authority areas, and eight regional woodlands,
thanks to more people getting the recycling habit. The trees represent
the number of tonnes of aluminium drinks cans and foil the public has
recycled over the past year - a tree for every tonne. Enough trees will
be planted to cover 900 football pitches when fully grown.
Over
300 local authorities took part in the year-long campaign to encourage
people to 'get recycling for trees' and each council has chosen the
native species which will be planted in local parks, gardens and
woodland to reflect the growth and impact of effective recycling.
Growing trees gives some sense of how the energy saved through recycling
aluminium accumulates over the years - with up to 95% energy saved time
after time, and an efficient UK recycling system getting new aluminium
drinks cans back on the shelf in just six weeks.
The
campaign has been sponsored by industry-backed, not-for-profit
organisation Alupro, and has been so successful that it will be
re-launched next year. Cheviot Trees are delighted to have
supplied many of the trees for this project.
Note:
The recycling rate of 25% for all aluminium consumer packaging,
including drinks cans and foil, as well as smaller items such as
chocolate foil and bottle caps, compares with a rate of 15% for all
household waste - thanks to good levels of public participation ! Legal
targets for recycling aluminium packaging mean that 50% more needs to be
collected by 2008. There is ample reprocessing capacity for aluminium in
the UK, and secure end-markets for the recycled metal, which is worth up
to £700 per tonne. It's all about boosting collection…
