Phragmites
australis - Common Reed forms extensive stands on mud or in shallow water in
marshes, fens, bogs, and the edges of shallow lakes, salt marshes and
estuaries. Reedbeds are formed with an extensive system of perennial
rhizomes.
Height & Shape
It is tall reed with annual cane-like stems up to 4.0mtrs in height.
Leaves & Flowers
The leaf blades are flat, usually 15-30 mm, tapering to long slender points,
and are arranged alternately. Flowers borne on a very large, many branched
inflorescence 20-60 cm in length and usually purple in colour. 10-15 mm in
length, composed of 1-6 flowers. The small branches between the flowers bear
conspicuous long, white silky hairs.
Availability
Cell Grown Phragmties australis is available from Cheviot Trees in sizes
indicated on our price lists. We may also be able to offer a choice of other
forms and sizes - eg Bare root or pots. Our friendly sales team will be
