Biodiversity & Habitat Enhancement
Agri-environment schemes and new rural policy are upon us!  Past uncertainty is rapidly turning into a positive way forward for farmers and landowners.  The implications of the Single Farm Payment and the need to meet environmental objectives, at all stops along the way, should not be seen as a problem.

Farm Policy Change

  • Is your strategy likely to change as a result of CAP reform?
Consider the many strategic, attractive and rewarding planting options now available.
  • Will poorer arable ground become uneconomic to crop?  Will livestock management systems and land use change?
Establish multipurpose farm forestry, woodland and shelterbelts.
  • Are your Rural and Countryside Stewardship Schemes including the planting of hedging and trees?
We can supply trees and materials for you to plant yourself, or we can provide a full contracting service if required.

Conservation and habitat enhancement

  • Can you improve the natural biodiversity on your land and work with nature to create a better environment?
Plant to encourage game and improve wildlife habitat.
  • Will ponds and watercourses be fenced off from livestock, banks be planted to stabilise erosion and create habitats for wildlife, fish, small mammals, birds and insects?
Tasteful and attractive planting can easily be designed.

Shelter and screening

  • Do new or renovated farm buildings, perhaps for business diversification opportunities, require shelter and screening?
Plant to landscape them, reduce wind chill and save heating bills!
  • Do urban fringes need shelterbelts, or barriers against vandals and intrustion?
Plant vigorous growing thorny species alongside fast growing trees.

EC Water framework directive & NVZ issues

  • With ever tightening water regulation, do your outflows meet current water quality standards?
    Do you produce:-
    - livestock slurry, silty discharge or septic outfalls?
    - farm steading run off, often including traces of diesel, chemical and fertiliser spillage?
Intercept drain outfalls and reduce diffuse pollution; prevent phosphates and nitrates from entering watercourses directly; construct settling ponds to trap silts, and reedbeds to allow natural flora and fauna to breakdown nutrients, contaminants and pollutants.
